The Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS), the only globally recognised organisation providing standards for identifying legitimate animal sanctuaries, awarded Accredited status to Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary as of April 21, 2026.

Accreditation signifies that Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary meets GFAS’ rigorous and peer-reviewed animal care standards which are confirmed by a comprehensive site visit. Accreditation also signifies adherence to standards addressing the sustainability of the organization, ethical principles, finances, staffing, education, outreach, security and safety and other operational aspects. The Accreditation status also provides a clear and trusted means for the public, donors, and grantors to recognise Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary as an exceptional organisation.

“We are thrilled to announce that Greyton Farm Animal Sanctuary is now the first farmed animal sanctuary in Africa to achieve Accreditation” said Jessica Harris, MS, GFAS Farmed Animal Program Director.

“In a part of the world where true sanctuaries are sorely needed, their work has saved the lives of countless animals, either through rescue and sanctuary or through some of the most innovative outreach programs we have seen. This two-pronged approach saves animals currently in need while creating conditions where fewer animals are mistreated in the future.

Operating with exemplary dedication, integrity and clarity, the sanctuary sets a compassionate example, providing residents with high-quality care, respect and agency. Through humane education for school children and their Pigs to Plants farm transition program, they are transforming their community for animals. We are so grateful for their role in South Africa and beyond.”
